What is a bridge?
A bridge closes the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap, and a false tooth/teeth in between. The two or more anchoring teeth around the gap are called abutment teeth.
How does a bridge work?
A bridge can replace 1 to a few teeth in your mouth. A bridge is not removable and typically requires 2 visits to build and place. A bridge requires at least 2 teeth that are healthy enough to support the weight of the replacement teeth. The bridge has at least two teeth crowned (abutments) with replacement teeth (pontics) attached to them.
Why would I get a bridge?
There are lots of reasons you might need a bridge, including:
- Closing an unsightly gap between your teeth
- Ensuring the remaining teeth don't move to close the gap made by the missing teeth
- Improving your chewing ability
- Improving your speaking ability
- Preventing premature wrinkles and facial lines
How long does it take to get a bridge?
Typically, our team can complete a bridge in two appointments. During your first visit, we will make sure you are thoroughly numb. We will shape the abutment teeth, verify the shade of your new teeth, and take molds of them. You will leave the office with a temporary bridge that will protect the shaped teeth and maintain the spacing for the new teeth. We will send the impression to a dental lab where they will custom make your new bridge. In about two weeks, you will return to have your new bridge fitted, checked and cemented.
How much does a bridge cost?
This depends on the type of material, the location of the tooth, and what other concerns you might have. We recommend you call one of our locations to make an appointment and see us today.
How long does a bridge last
Dental bridges typically last 5 to 15 years, and sometimes even longer. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, it is not unusual for the life span of a fixed bridge to be over 10 years.
How do I care for a bridge?
Dental bridges require even more regular and consistent home and professional dental care than your natural teeth do. This is because the area beneath the dental bridge must be cleaned. Our team will teach you on proper care of your bridge to help ensure the health of the teeth around your new dental bridge. Evaluating and cleaning bridges and the surroudning teeth is a regular part of your dental check-up.
